Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari offers a unique, hands-on volunteer marine research internship, developed through years of experience with marine research and data collection on board our platform of opportunity. Join us and learn how tourism and research can work together!
Background: We have a passion for bringing research, education and awareness together. In addition to taking paying passengers, we operate as a platform of opportunity (taking out researchers from local universities) and as a data collection vessel. For the past 19 years, we have been actively involved in collecting data that otherwise would not have been able to be collected. We have facilitated many research studies including postgraduate theses and ongoing research and local universities.
Purpose of the internship: The marine research intern is responsible for assisting with the ongoing longterm data collection on board the Dolphin Explorer. Data is collected on every safari and conservation cruise undertaken and includes (but is not limited to): marine mammal data, marine mammal photo-identification, other marine megafauna data, water quality, microplastics & other ad-hoc data.
Commitment: minimum of 3 months required (hours and days can vary depending upon your availability)
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
o Assisting with visual surveying to locate and identify marine life including marine mammals (primary species - common dolphins, Bryde’s whales, bottlenose dolphins and orca/killer whales)
o Marine data collection including ranging from water clarity and colour through to marine mammals and other megafauna (photo-ID, GPS, environmental data, behavioural data)
o Interacting with passengers through presentation and conversation
o Assisting crew on an ad-hoc basis
o A strong interest in marine conservation
o Working towards or completed an undergraduate degree (preferably science-based)
o Minimum 3-month commitment
o Fluent in English
o Social, enthusiastic, can-do attitude
o Not susceptible to seasickness

Please note that there are is no remuneration or compensation for partaking in this volunteer internship.
