Meet the Crew - Alex
Where are you originally from?
Originally from the UK - I'm a Southerner!
What is your previous experience (uni/research/other relevant jobs etc.)?
I have a Master's degree in Zoology where I studied the dietary ecology of pine martens.
Since then I have volunteered a lot of my time to different research projects including leopard seals, sea turtles and whales in Tonga, Canada and New Zealand
How long have you been working for Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari?
About 8 months now!
What's the best thing about working in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park?
The coexistence with such a variety of life right outside NZ's biggest city.
It's easy for our jobs to become our world, after all, it is our passion but what do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I like to go the beach and swim, surf and eat pizza - yum!
What's your favourite animal in the whole wide world?
My favourite animal in the whole wide world is the leopard.
If there is one question you could have answered about the oceans right this instant, what would it be?
I'd like to know how many species we don't yet know about in the oceans and what we could learn from them.
If there's one place in the world you could visit (money no object), where would it be and why?
I would like to visit Antarctica while the ecosystem is still relatively intact to see all the magnificent animals you can't see anywhere else, not like that in the wild anyways.
Any particular stand out memories or highlights during your time so far at Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari?
Stand out memory so far is seeing many thousands of common dolphins so close together and feeling a sense of being so overwhelmed by nature.
If you could give your passengers one piece of advice, what would it be?
Treat the trip as if you weren't there to see whales and dolphins, enjoy the view and relax, then when you see the animals you have will have an overwhelming sense of delight!
